Our Community Garden, also known as Greenhope Oasis, spans across a range of allotment plots merged together to create an open plan space. We have developed a variety of zones providing a perfect community space for a broad range of activities.

A lot of hard work has gone into the Garden to establish ourselves within the community as a valuable resource.

Our current aims include:

  • Bringing the Community together through growing fruit, flowers and vegetables and through taking part in activities and events.
  • Providing low cost / free fruit and vegetables to the local community and those most in need.
  • Providing a welcoming and safe place to encourage visitors and volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life to come to learn , take part or to just relax and meet people.
  • Improving local resilience and food insecurity by growing food and promoting gardening, sustainable living and health eating; providing skills and support to local residents in growing fruit and vegetables.
  • Growing and developing our network of volunteers and Friends of the Garden to establish a Garden Steering Committee; a dedicated leadership team whose role is to build and maintain a garden program that will secure future sustainability.
  • Protecting wildlife on site and improving biodiversity.

Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Due to the commitment and achievements of our volunteers, in 2021 we were nominated, by members of the local community, and awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Created in 2002 for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, QAVS awards have been shining a light on the fantastic work of voluntary groups for many years. Equivalent to an MBE, QAVS are the highest awards given to local voluntary groups in the UK, and they are awarded for life.

We were truly honoured to have Her Royal Highness, Sophie, The Countess of Wessex present our Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service to Dave Johnson and our team of Volunteers (October 2021). Also present were the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside.

Award - DJ2
