A Brief History of NECA
In 1973 a small steering group explored the possibility of a Tyneside Council on Alcoholism; this was to provide advice, information, education and referral services to those directly or indirectly affected by alcohol problems.
The company was founded in 1974 as the North East Council on Alcoholism and was given a £2000 grant from the Voluntary Trust. Fundraising took place and additional money was received from the Government to help support the £7000-£8000 running costs. With this support, NECA trained a small group of volunteer counsellors in Newcastle and formed a network with other locally based services.
In 1977 The Pilgrim Street Trust was formed to raise money for premises and a property was purchased in Mosley Street in 1983.
In 1984 the name was changed to North East Council on Addictions. This reflected the widening substance remit.
The Mosley street premises were officially opened by the Princess of Wales on the 22nd May 1986.
Working in the area of substance use and Gambling, NECA increasingly diversified in the range of services we provide to ensure we tailor packages to meet need of both Adults, Young people and families.
We know that there are many individual routes to recovery and our central aim is to support and facilitate individuals and families to achieve this.
In 2007 The Duchess of Northumberland became NECA’s patron
